On April 28th 2010, Canadian Mining Giant, Barrick Gold, held its annual shareholders meeting in Toronto. Called by protestbarrick.net, this protest aimed to highlight Barrick Gold's shameful transnational human rights and environmental record. AW@L was there supporting and we spoke with proest organizers and we arranged a special interview with the Indigenous peoples contingent from Chile. Also present was "the bearded man" with a tree branch over his shoulder, and a two row wampum flag waving from it.

Among the hundred plus protesters were members of indigenous communities from Chile, Paupau New Guniea, Baluchistan, and Mayan lands, who spoke of the socio-cultural and environmental havoc Barrick's mining operations were having on their people.  Barrick's Chairman, Peter Munk assured the devastated indigenous that Barrick's Corporate Social Responsibility model assures no negative will come to communities near their mining operations...

We also caught up with Rebecca Sargent of a Peace of Conflict, an organization which, among other things, tracks the activities of Canadian mining companies abroad, with a heavy focus on the Congo.
