CNSC's Marc Drolet (20mins) on radioactive contamination and planned "nuclear cluster" in Peterborough area

How can the public be protected if the regulator is unable and not interested in fining polluters for exceeding a yearly allowable release limit?

CNSC's Marc Drolet (20mins) on radioactive contamination and planned "nuclear cluster" in Peterborough area
The audio is of a follow up conversation with Marc Drolet of the CNSC, I asked him about the planned nuclear cluster for Peterborough Ontario and if nuclear polluters were regulated based on acceptable release limits or the cumulative dose exposure of radiation to people living in the area from current and possible future companies part of a nuclear cluster.  I also asked Drolet about the status of Shield Source's canceled application.  Shield Source's tritium operations have been suspended after a third party report indicated a discrepancy in their reported emissions; which were recalculated at approximately nine times over their stated emissions.  According to Drolet, the federal government has asked the CNSC to develop a financial fine schedule for the companies that the CNSC regulates, but the CNSC does not have the ability to fine the polluters it regulates, nor had the CNSC sought our other responsible authorities with the ability to leverage a fine against a polluter for exceeding thier maximum yearly allowable limit of radiation.

I wrote Marc Drolet, communications officer for the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, to find out about what Rolls Royce Nuclear is doing in Peterborough Ontario after a report by Chex News, here

Here is his response....

Dear Zach:

Rolls Royce Nuclear in Peterborough does not hold any licences from the CNSC. I would invite you to communicate with industry and government representatives (in charge of regional development) in order to learn more about your question regarding a plan to develop a nuclear cluster in the Peterborough area.

Regards,

Marc Drolet
