On March 5th a large crowd gathered at Steel Workers Hall in Toronto to watch the release of a new film on from Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (KI) First Nations looking at their struggle to protect their lands. Entitled Kanawayandan D'aaki - Protecting Our Land. The film was followed by a panel of leaders from KI speaking in Anishanbek and English.

Toronto Housing Crisis: A Photo Essay

The City of Toronto is in the throes of an affordable housing crisis that has left thousands of citizens homeless, hundreds are dying on the streets, and conditions are only getting worse with the current economic crisis.

A study on housing in Toronto revealed these facts. There is no indication that the situation has gotten any better:

1. 552,000 people live in poverty in Toronto, roughly 25% of the city’s population.
2. From 2000 to 2002 only 3% of the new construction in the city was of rental units (873 units) compared with 97% for the home ownership market (28,492 units)
3. Toronto’s rents rose by 37% between 1997 and 2002
4. Only 20% of rental units in the city rent for less than $800 a month.
5. More than 250,000 tenant households pay more than 30% of their income on rent; 20% pay more than 50%
6. There are 71,000 households on the social housing waiting lists.
7. 31,985 different people stayed in Toronto’s emergency shelters in 2002. 4,779 were children.

This Photo Essay includes images and stories of people living in the streets of Toronto, as well as people living in community housing, it also covers the Toronto Homeless Memorial, dedicated to the memory of the hundreds who have died on the streets of Toronto, as well as stories of activists employing direct action to reclaim abandoned buildings in order to convert them into affordable housing.
