What’s new?

It's time again to submit your story pitches to the Media Co-op! As we do every month, in February we'll pay two contributors for news features to be published in The Dominion. We prioritize solutions-oriented news pieces with a Canadian angle, including photo essays and video pitches. Pitches are welcome from anyone; priority for payment goes to those who have previously contributed.

How to pitch a story:

1. If you do not have a Media Co-op account (which you can also use to post photos, audio, video and stories directly to the Media Co-op site), you’ll need to set one up:

mediacoop.ca/user

2. Check out our writer’s guide for hot topics and details about writing for The Dominion:

dominionpaper.ca/write

For information about making a video pitch, check out our production guidelines and tutorials:

dominionpaper.ca/video/create

3. Peruse the latest Media Co-op discussion page for story ideas:

http://www.mediacoop.ca/group/1496/discuss/5719

4. Pitch! To pitch an article, fill out the form on this page:

A couple hot tips:

1. The Media Co-op has a special budget – sponsored by Koumbit, a non-profit web development, website creation, graphic design and IT training organization – to pay for one article about technology and society per month (in particular, we’re interested in coverage of copyright, privacy, free software, and net neutrality). These articles are 5-800 words, payment is a flat $50, and they follow the same pitch process outlined below.

2. As a member-run organization, the Media Co-op has a vested interest in publishing stories our readers want to read. Our readers have been posting ideas for stories about co-operatives that should be told, and we want those stories! Take a look at the discussion page here:

mediacoop.ca/group/143/discuss/2001

Consider pitching a story you see here, or pitch us your own news story about an innovative co-op or the co-operative movement. If we like your pitch, we’ll pay...

sitting down is the hardest part of writing

Do you have stories about gender and queer issues you want to tell? How about resource extraction in Canada, or climate debt, or human migration, or alternatives to the economic crisis? Do you write about women's sports or technology? Health or humour?

As we do every month, the Media Co-op will pay two contributors for news features to be published in The Dominion. We prioritize solutions-oriented news pieces with a Canadian angle, including photo essays and video pitches.

Check out our writer’s guide for suggested topics and details about writing for The Dominion:

Most people, even those of us who don't know squat about the mechanics of the global economic system, find the whole set-up of the G8 and G20 summits distasteful: economic big-wigs from the world's richest regions will descend next weekend into military zones built by our government, and these rich and powerful men (they're mostly men) will meet and make policies that will affect you, me, and the whole wide world.

Yuckier, though, is the content of those meetings. And certainly very, very nasty is the way in which the meetings shake down, with big decisions made in secret by a few powerful people who don't have to be accountable to – or even consider the needs and desires of – the rest of us.

In response to the G8 and G20, people do diverse and interesting things. They too gather at G8 and G20 summits, in huge numbers and from all over the world. They march in the streets. They dress up in funny outfits. They shout things like, "capitalism is broken," "smash the state," "Indigenous rights now," "we want climate justice," "we love our public services," and "no one is illegal." They organize their own summits and talk about the problems of poverty and homelessness, resource extraction and pollution, climate and migrant justice. They break windows and capsize mailboxes. They dance. They play games. They camp in parks and crash on each other's floors. They climb tall buildings and bridges and let loose big colourful banners. They yell at cops.

The people say they are doing these things to draw attention to the fishy things they notice about the G8/G20.

Fishy thing number one, they say, is the undemocratic nature of the G8/G20 meetings.

Fishy thing number two is the single-issue agenda of the G8/G20: to further the wealth of the wealthy.

Fishy thing number three is the public resources spent on having the meetings take place at all.

Why do people protest the G8 and G20? Let's take it from the bottom.

FISH #3: "SECURITY"

The really, really fishy thing about the fact that Canadians have blown their load on the G8 and G20 summits is what we've blown...

2010 is the Year of the Dominion.

Thanks to the unrelenting dedication of our cooperative's organizers and contributors, and thanks to the solid support of sustaining members, subscribers and donors to the Dominion and Media Co-op, 2010 has come in like a tiger!

First: the numbers.

The Dominion / Media Co-op is currently supported by 143 sustaining members. 437 people subscribe to The Dominion, and 74 people and organizations receive sponsored community subscriptions. 181 people currently write for, illustrate, copy edit and otherwise volunteer for the paper. Four staff are paid to edit, organize and outreach; three journalists per month are paid to write; and cover illustrators are now being solicited and paid. The Dominion will publish two special issues in 2010. The Media Co-op has two office spaces: one in Montreal and one in Vancouver.

One number has been reduced: The Dominion will only publish eight issues in 2010, a decision passed at a Board meeting on January 27. The decision to publish eight issues instead of 10 was based on:
- the high monthly cash and labour expense related to publishing regular issues of the Dominion (due to low printing numbers and therefore high price per copy)
- a desire to reallocate resources, with more money and labour spent expanding the Media Co-op model
- increasing the number of special issues, which are high-profile projects for the Dominion
- the natural rhythm of the year, taking into account two special issues, an AGM and a membership drive in 2010

We are interested in your feedback about this decision, so do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns.

2010 has begun with an unchallenged focus all the way west. After the Dominion released its special report on the Olympics, the Vancouver Media Co-op (VMC) exploded onto the news scene as the leading information source for news of Olympics resistance. The Co-op's media space in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside has been a-buzz with over 40 independent journalists from all corners of North America, who have been using the Co-op's website to post the latest videos, photos, articles, blogs and news releases pertaining to Olympics resistance, averaging 16 unique posts daily. With over a million hits to the website the first weekend of the Olymipcs, the server crashed twice, due to the high volume of traffic directed toward vancouver.mediacoop.ca and 2010.mediacoop.ca. The VMC...

Starting in January 2010, The Dominion will pay $100 for cover designs. Based on the portfolios we receive, we will contract an artist each month to create a cover design based on a theme or a lead article.  After a discussion with editors about the theme, the contracted artist will have one week to submit two or three sketches. Deadline for the final design will be the 25th of the month.

Artists should email their portfolio to info@mediacoop.ca.

Sincerely,
The Dominion Newspaper Co-operative
