MEDIA ADVISORY
TORONTO- Negotiations at the giant Delta Chelsea hotel broke down on election day as hotel owners failed to make progress on key issues surrounding safer workloads, job security, wages, and benefits. On Wednesday, October 27, 2010, workers there will walk out, starting a two-week strike.
Feliz Serrano, a 30-year server at the Delta Chelsea says: “How long do you have to work at a hotel before you can expect the security of a 40-hour week? After 30 years of service to the hotel, I am lucky if I get 30 hours of work a week. The Delta Chelsea continues to take away our rights to work and have a decent life. We have waited long enough. It’s time we get what we deserve.”
The workers reached a strike/lockout deadline last week, and voted 95% to authorize a strike earlier this summer. Picket lines will go up around the hotel’s several entrances by 7 AM on Wednesday, October 27.
Join us tomorrow for a press conference and solidarity rally at the Delta Chelsea with John Cartwright, President of the Toronto and York Region Labour Council and Nancy Pridham, OPSEU Vice President.
