Please join the Ali Mustafa Memorial Collective on Saturday, 14 March 2015 for an evening in honour of the memory and work of Ali Mustafa. The event will feature discussions by journalists Sharif Kouddous (with Democracy Now and the Nation Institute, currently based in Egypt) and Jihan Hafiz (with The Real News Network and Al Jazeera, currently based in Ferguson, Missouri) on their experiences working as social-justice oriented freelancers in conflict areas, as well as tributes to Ali Mustafa from those who worked with him.

All proceeds from this event will go towards establishing an annual Ali Mustafa Memorial Award for freelance journalists. Information about the award, application process and nominations will be introduced during this event, with the first winner announced in 2016.

Sponsored by:
The Ali Mustafa Memorial Collective, the Canadian Media Guild Freelance Branch, and Canadian Journalists for Free Expression.

About Ali
On March 9th 2014, Toronto-based freelance photojournalist Ali Mustafa was killed in an aerial bombing carried out by the Assad government in Syria along with seven other civilians. Ali is joined by a long list of journalists who have been killed on the job in Syria and in other conflict zones around the world. Freelancers are especially vulnerable to these kinds of dangerous conditions, lacking the institutional support and networks of more established journalists. To learn more about Ali and his work, please visit: www.rememberingalimustafa.org.
