OTTAWA, Monday December 14, 2010:

Judge L. Girault acquitted scholarship mathematics-physics student Marc Kelly today after a long trespass trial.

The Youtube video of the arrest got national media attention in February.

The student self-represented.

The University, the Ottawa Police, and the Crown gave it everything they had (witnesses, video surveillance, Legal Counsel opinion, etc.) and lost.

The case sets a precedent: The student union is the legal occupier of its offices on the U of O campus.

Mireille Gervais, Director, Student Appeal Centre, student union, said this was an important ruling to create safe space on campus in an aggressive university-management environment.
