‎"Free! Cameron Gia-Lynn Lawrence!

This act of child apprehension was done in an attempt to silence Cameron's Mother whose actively speaking out against unwanted development of an RV Park on her traditional Dene Suline territory.

“Free! Cameron Gia-Lynn Lawrence! Support the Dene Suline Sovereignty!

On August 8th, Carrie Lawrence's child, Cameron Gia-Lynn Lawrence was apprehended, two days after Carrie spoke at the Denesuline Peace Camp solidarity night at the Rhizome Cafe in Vancouver BC. Carrie was assaulted by a man; when the police were called, the compliant was that Carrie was alledgedly hitting her daughter, Carrie states this to be false and that she was wrongfully arrested and no charges were laid. At that time, Cameron Gia-Lynn Lawrence, Carrie's 8 year old daughter was apprehended and is currently in Surrey BC in foster care. Carrie states, “The cops immediately stereotyped me, falsely arrested me and apprehended my child.”

Many Land Defenders experience political repression and are criminalized by Canada's law enforcement system. Many Native people in our communities are institutionalized in Canada's prison system. And Native children are vulnerable to being institutionalized by Family and Children Services. Canada has a long violent history of taking Native children away from their families with the intention of assimilating them from their culture and breaking their spirits. The residential schools may have closed down, but Family and Children Services has picked up where the residential schools have left off.
