Not Shot

This video does NOT show a woman being shot.  Nor does the accompanying story suggest that a woman was shot.  The video shows a woman standing nearby as police fire tear gas into the crowd.  She is out of frame when the shots are fired, and only after do we see a woman that looks like her on the ground.  A likely scenario: she pulled back as shots were fired and dropped to the ground for cover.

It is bad enough that police are firing tear gas into a crowd of Canadian protestors on the streets of Toronto.  Trying to embellish the story with an anti-police bias only weakens your side of the argument.  Let's talk about what is actually happening out there, not dystopian fantasies about murderous police shooting people in the streets.

Rubber bullets. She was shot

Rubber bullets. She was shot with rubber bullets.

it doesn't say shot with what

it doesn't say shot with what you moron . she is clearly being shot with something

its tear gas idiot rubber

its tear gas idiot rubber bullets don't have fucking smoke trails

Woman not shot????

I can assure you that the woman on the ground was shot. Twice actually. Once in the sternum and once on her left arm. There are photos of the wounds taken in the detention center. The arm wound has not healed well. It became infected. Three weeks after the shooting, she still does not have full mobility of that arm. And she is left-handed. Wake up.... I am that girl's mother.

Shot or not?

She was shot. Twice. She is my daughter.

Shocking

Is this how peaceful protesters are to be treated in a supposedly first world democratic country???? Wow!

It is very obvious that the

It is very obvious that the protestors are not in any way peaceful...they are screaming at the cops and taunting them. If they were peaceful they would be in the designated protest areas or would allow the cops to arrest them, this is what you do when you protest peacefully.

 What?? Sreaming and taunting

What?? Sreaming and taunting are parts of a protest, otherwise you're not protesting,.. Since when noises have become brutal?

You say they should stay in the designated protest areas, but come on, what's a demonstration if you just do what you're told to do and nothing else? Stay at home and sream in front of you're TV then..

I believe you can stay peaceful and sream, protest anywhere you want, as long as you're not violating anything or hurting anyone.

And allow the cops to arrest you? Yeah right, that's not peaceful, that's stupid..

very obviously ignorant

Sudbury, the park in which those women are being kicked and sprayed WAS a designated protest area, and I don't see them resisting arrest, so what you say has no connection to fact in that case.  But that isn't even the point.  Shouting at a cop who brutalises your friends is not a violent act.  If refusing to move warrants kicks and spray, tell it to Rosa Parks.  As for daring to protest at undesignated places and times, or arguing with and disobeying instructions from cops, try MLK.  I suggest you get your ignorant ass to a bookshop, buy MLK's autobiography, and find out how people won civil rights in America, (not to mention the 40-hour week etc. etc.) using the strategies you sniff at.

very obviously ignorant

Sudbury, the women being sprayed and kicked in the vid were in Queen's park, which WAS a designated protest zone.  Neither were they resisting arrest.  Where is your argument in that case?  But even that is not the point.  Rosa Parks was not on a designated protest bus, if my memory serves, when she disobeyed the rules.  Neither was MLK when he stood up to cops and disobeyed their instructions.  I suggest you get you ignorant ass down to a book shop, buy his autobiography, and learn something about how peaceful protest won us our rights, using the strategies you sniff at.  Read some before you write some.

come on... there was stuff

come on... there was stuff being done on the fly what were designated protest areas unfortunately had to become no go zones

don't blame police blame black block for taking their protests too far

i don't believe any of those videos show excessive force

cops are trained to do exactly what they did

have a problem go after the training

My necessary

another

black bloc cops? I hope

black bloc cops? I hope that's a typo

We are doing what they want us to do: dividing ourselves between good and bad protestors. I was hoping, after police attacks on people sitting Kumbaya and the like, that the non-violent crew would finally realise there is nothing to gain by asking a police state to 'please be nice and do the right thing for once'.... apparently not.

This is how 'democracy' loooks like

I hope this will get proper people's response, which is to be

totally pissed off at fascist state protectionism of the rich

and start fighting back, especially after just announced austerity

programs, which will cut the litle of the remaining social benefits

of world population. These thugs were ordered to intimidate, beat up and arrest people even before blac bloc cops instegated the whole 'protestor violence' thing.

<strong?Who's violent here?</strong>

The corporate media will

The corporate media will never show this, never investigate the brutality. The liberals will never stop crying and fighting for endless reforms to a unreformable system of exploitation.

THE BATTLE LINES ARE DRAWN, DONT BOTHER OFFERING 'WHITE ROSES' TO FASCISTS

surprised?

This is the how the police works..

Anyone surprised or outraged by this, needs to learn the very basic functions of society.

The real question is what are you gonna do about ?

police behaviour

Unbelievable and unacceptable. I encourage all of you to send emails to the office of Mayor Miller expressing your views on this police behaviour:

mayor_miller@toronto.ca

Can we be reasonable?

Police abused their power in extremity. This was a disaster, and it's repugnant that the mayor of Toronto is not promising an inquiry. We have to press for it.

But let's not make excuses for the violence of rioters who decided that destroying property, terrorizing store employees, and pulling bricks out of the street to smash buildings was a useful way to express themselves. To believe that Canada is a "fascist state" is insulting to those who live in actual fascist states, and suggests that the person saying as much doesn't have the slightest political understanding beyond empty rage.

Blaming provocateurs is a way to offload blame to others. I was there. There were plenty of skinny little 18-25 year olds, very obviously not police, chanting stupid slogans "Fuck the pigs!" and destroying shit. THAT IS NOT HOW DEMOCRACY WORKS.

Also, the "corporate media" are reporting pretty well on this. Anyone who knows reporters caught in the melee knows some of them were arrested too, and police made little distinction between protesters and reporters.

The biggest outrage this weekend is the police brutality and the refusal on the part of the mayor and police force to admit it.

The second outrage is the juvenile political violence that instigated ithe whole mess, and the apologies being made for same. Sorry.

fascism or not

This fascism or not fascism argument misses the point and intentionally it seems turns a blind eye to the context in which the ruling classes and systems have functioned historically and currently to promote their interests,

It may be that the fact of class conflict that would sacrifice any number of people and their dignity through any strategy for the sake of gaining an increased concentration of wealth and power is incomprehensible; to believers in the respectful democratic plurality of a contemporary capitalist republic .

I find it incomprehensible that those who are out gunned oppressed overpowered have to apologize for any of their attempts at self determination self defense; where as the more powerful are not made to apologize or stop their violence and theft at all, but I digress.

for us to discuss whether the acusation that canada or the USA is a fascist state is a miss lable or a hyperbole we must first define our terms.

Websters will do fine for my purposes in this argument.

Main Entry: fas·cism
Pronunciation: \ˈfa-ˌshi-zəm also ˈfa-ˌsi-\
Function: noun
Etymology: Italian fascismo, from fascio bundle, fasces, group, from Latin fascis bundle & fasces fasces
Date: 1921
1 often capitalized : a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

— fas·cist \-shist also -sist\ noun or adjective often capitalized

— fas·cis·tic \fa-ˈshis-tik also -ˈsis-\ adjective often capitalized

— fas·cis·ti·cal·ly \-ti-k(ə-)lē\ adverb often capitalized

So the form is cerntainly different, we have presidents prime ministers, different elected officials, so to this formaly ,we have no dictatorship so no fascism but let us dig deeper into the essence of the word.

severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control (homland security detention centers presidential decree beyond court challenge and secrecy not to mention the self censoring nationalism of the media. along with socialism for the rich)

We have that in the US, in fact the US in the 73 imposed fascism on the chilean people by helping overthrow their democracy and impose their neoliberal policies(policies by the way like that of the g8)

In Canada we see the attempt by the state and the g8 elites (types in canada esspecially mining interests) to impose severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
This is the same impulse same strategy same desired result as fascism. What the assertion that a democratic regime is fascist is to assert that it's claim on democratic values are a hollow lie to hide it's fascist actions and ambitions, that subtance not form is what matters in politics and life.

Listen to the perspectives of chilean people who lived under precisely such a regime in chile, Imposed/supported by the democratic repulic state of The USA

http://www.subversiveactionfilms.org/the-chicago-conspiracy/

The Chicago Conspiracy is about today. Following a national plebiscite in 1988, Pinochet ended his rule in 1990. The political classes in Chile only allowed the country to vote an end to the dictatorship out of growing fear of armed insurrection. 1990 brought a democratic government to Chile that continues to further the same neoliberal economic policies that were put into place by the dictatorship. Throughout the film, we follow the social discontent that exists to this day. We explore the legacy of a dictatorship.

The Chicago Conspiracy is about the students who fight a dictatorship-era educational law put into place on the last day of military rule. Over 700,000 students went on strike in 2006 to protest the privatized educational system. Police brutally repressed student marches and occupations.

The Chicago Conspiracy is about the Day of the Youth Combatant. March 29 is not only about the Vergara brothers–it is a day to remember all youth combatants who have died under the dictatorship and current democratic regime

Really?

Are the protesters without fault? The Tags on the videos are clearly bias, as is mainstream media.

Is this brutal - yes - but on both sides. I think there are alot of big issues at stake, and pointing fingers on events doesnt really address what is going on.

as far as facism is

as far as facism is concerned; musolini claimed that the inital phases of fasism always involve a merging of business and state. i can't think of a more obvious example of this than the g8/g20 summits. another hallmark of facist/totalitarian governments is to crack down upon the medias ability to cover issues. what i see whenever there is one of the various globalization summits has nothing to do with democracy, or the will of the vast majority of people on our planet.

Propagande

Your videos do not show where the events are protesters who started the hostilities ... It should show both sides of events. Not one.

Otherwise, it becomes propaganda.

 protestors have the right to

protestors have the right to dissent, violent means or not.

the police are supposed to protect and serve the PEOPLE, not the illegitimate G8/G20 summit.

this summit could have cost nothing if it were done at the UN headquarters but the point of the G8/G20 is to avoid being held legally accountable and to consolidate power to the West.

some of those "violent anarchists" have yet to be proven if they were agent provacateurs or not.

either way, the gov't and police were not there to protect the city or the people but the States corruption while using our money to terrorize and violate us.

Someone should have grown a

Someone should have grown a pair and lit those pigs up with a molotov cocktail

g20

jackcrawford / July 3, 2010 at 10:21 PM i went downtown sunday for g20 i wanted to be a witness. peaceful people of toronto standing quietly were rushed and beaten by shields and clubs for absolutely no reason. people were knocked over falling on each other. thecrowd got up, fell back 30 feet and quietly sang '0 canada'. when they finished, the police attacked again. 'o canada' again then police attacked the 3rd time. the people were running scared, but i refused to run and was beaten back. the police took me. i went quietly with my arms out. they ripped my shirt in half, dropped me on my head, and beat me with sticks, boots and fists, crushed my glasses underfoot, tied me up with twist ties, left me to stand bloody in the rain, shirtless for 1 hour. i was not arrested or charged, then drove me to the airport 4 hours later, and dropped me on the street.
clearly the message is, if you stand up and have a voice we will beat you down. we wont tax the banks or the rich(FTT) but happy canada day, heres a beating and a new tax(HST) on the poor too, suckers.

bahaha police brutality  are

bahaha police brutality

are you kidding? grow a pair of balls

when protestors provoke or vandalize a riot cop is trained to do what you see in the videos

my guess is most of the people commenting weren't even there

don't comment if you don't know what you're talking about

and don't question police when they're not in the wrong all that does is cause trust issues among police and civilians

stop stirring up a pot that doesn't have any ingredients

I was there

I was there and the pig attacked us without warning.  The next day I got arrested 15 blocks from any protest and threatened with beatings and rape.  You're a fool if you believe that the pigs did the right thing (900 people with charges dropped...  for every 11 people arrested 9 were totally innocent of wrong doing.  Still call it great police work now wouldn't you?  It is actually called cowardice but these cops know what cowardice is like seeing as they ran from a bunch of teenagers breaking windows then attacked pacifists.  These guys gave up their vacation to go beat 'hippies' and all they did was shatter millions of Canadians faith in police mine included.  For you to defend their actions just shows what a moron you are and what a moron you aspire to be.
