From the April 19th 2013 edition of AW@L Radio - A bit of a track from Test Their Logik's new album Be starts leads into our first piece, which is a read of the public declaration posted up on the CLAC website which has a growing list of supporter groups and is called Solidarity against police repression: We Will Not Submit to By-Law P-6 which is being used by Montreal police to shut down any protest that does not have pre-approval. A 637$ ticket is given to anyone who is obstructing the movement of other citizens during a non-approved protest.
Dan then reads a eulogy for margret thatcher from Vancouver based class war punker Garth Mullins which recognises that Maggie's work to build a world that does not include us, carries on despite her trip to hell.
Dan then notes a piece to check out from KPFK, it is an interview about jailed lawyer Lynne Stewart who is dying of cancer in an american jail cell while serving a 10 year sentence for defending her client.
The show jumps to 3 bits of news for waterloo region - one is the opening of Sanctuary Refugee health clinic in Kitchener which will help alleviate a lot of stress and poor treatment refugees face across the region due to doctors, clinics, and hospitals either not knowing how to identify or treat exotic diseases, or refusing to serve people who don't have complete paperwork. The second piece is a note that the city of Kitchener is holding consultations for the OLG's shameful idea to build more casinos. And the third is the news that the government of ontario will be joining the region in their appeal on the OMB decision that puts developer profit over the regions ability to #stopTheSprawl.
Jumping to Greece but sticking with news about canada, thousands of greeks to the streets in several cities recently to decry canadian mining firm Helenic Gold's proposed project in the north of the country. Earlier this year, the company's greek office was firebombed.
A new track - Fallen Leaves - from Test Their Logik breaks up the show and we return with news from #opThunderbird, where a protest with 20 people at a thunder bay cop station drew a massive over response from the police. Citing threats from facebook, the cops locked down as protestors continued their efforts demanding action from the cops on missing and murdered Indigenous women.
Moving to a piece from think progress, Dan reads about the suicide of Reteah Parson's who was gang-raped by 4 male youth who then spread a picture of the crime around town. Reteah found no help from the police in Nova Scotia who did not pursue the boys on the rape or the production of child porn. Reteah was bullied after the rape took place by peers in this fucked up victim blaming rape culture.
Before moving to NDNs From All Directions from A Tribe Called Red, we note the upcoming release, and chance to pre-order Tribe’s new album Nation to Nation. Also noted is the documentary No Sochi! Which looks at resistance to the 2014 Sochi winter olympics taking place were the Circassian genocide took place.
After coming back to the show, more notes are made – the first is the launch of Anishinabek news online, the second is a great short list of resources for decolonisation and unsettling settler privilege.
Two pieces of news lead us to Test Their Logik’s Bee Healthy from their new album Be. The first is news from Vancouver where DTES residents have started to claim the old police station as social housing and community space. The action of painting an entire outside wall with images and words, continues the work being done to make the DTES a social justice zone and to battle continuing soul sucking gentrification. The final news piece is the announcement from the coroner looking into the killing of Robert Dziekanski, that the polish man’s death at the Vancouver airport at the hands of RCMP officers was a homicide.
