DECOLONIZING OUR MINDS 2013: PRACTICING DECOLONIAL LOVE

http://www.uoftessu.com/dom2013/

Over the last five years, ESSU’s annual Decolonizing Our Minds conferences have attempted to address the different ways groups practice resistance.

This year, we want to focus on the affective and emotional narratives and journeys of decolonization by looking at the ways in which individuals and communities practice love.

Junot Diaz once said, “The actual standard of decolonial love, how little discussed, how little understood, and yet in many ways is a great test of who we are and of our praxis and our communal praxis.” For our event, we hope to interrogate what “self-love” and “community” means in order to learn more about the conflicts and tensions that groups and individuals, involved in social organizing, encounter.

More importantly, we hope to understand how groups show love to one another and how individuals can care for themselves in response to structural oppression and colonial domination.
