The brutal shooting of 18 year-old Sammy Yatim over the summer, shot nine times by a Toronto police officer (most of the shots were fired when Sammy was already hit and on the ground), created a wave of anger across the country. Mass protests followed within days in the city of Toronto, and many were forced to confront the long-standing issue of police brutality and profiling for the first time.
On our York University campus, Toronto Police beat to death 18 year-old Junior Manon in 2010. All of the officers were cleared of any wrongdoings in this case.
The issue of police accountability, profiling and violence is a pressing issue for working class youth, particularly immigrants and racial minorities. How do we take a stand against police brutality? What are the alternatives to current policing system? What is the role of police in capitalist society?
Join us for a discussion on police brutality and feel free to bring ideas and commentary.
Organized by the Socialist Fightback Club
(Part of our weekly discussion groups/meetings that are held every Thursday)
