Press Conference to Demand an End to Police Violence Against African Canadians in Mental Distress
In response to Sunday’s killing of Andrew Loku by the Toronto Police Service, the African Canadian Legal Clinic, Across Boundaries, Canadian Mental Health Association, Urban Alliance on Race Relations, Black Lives Matter – Toronto and the Anti-Black Racism Network will be hosting a press conference to address the dramatic over-representation of African Canadians with mental health issues killed by Toronto police.
Since 1988, half of the victims killed by Toronto police while in mental distress are Black men. Overall, racialized people represent 75% of the victims in these tragic incidents. Yet, the Toronto Police Service continues to refuse the adoption of a service strategy that explicitly aims to reduce these racial disparities and prevent racism from influencing Officers’ decisions to use lethal force on individuals in mental distress.
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
The details of the press conference are as follows:
Date: July 9, 2015
Time: 10:00 a.m.
Place: Across Boundaries
51 Clarkson Ave.
Toronto, Ontario
M6E 2T5
