Using social media, community town halls, door-to-door canvassing and it’s
own counter-survey, the People’s Poll, Toronto Stop the Cuts Network has
organized a Mass Meeting to Stop Ford’s Cuts. Over 2000 people plan to
converge at Dufferin Grove Park on Saturday September 10th at 12pm. The
goal of this meeting is to put forward a vision of the Toronto that people
need and deserve. Participants will draft a Toronto Declaration and plan
their next moves ahead of the crucial vote on city budget priorities that
is set for September 26th and 27th.

Interviews Available:

Jessica Lyons is an Emergency Room Nurse, an ONA Local 95 member and new
mother who has been working in Toronto’s West-end with Toronto Stop the
Cuts Network: “All summer we’ve seen so many creative protests – all-night
deputations, viral online petitions, read-ins and camp-ins.  This meeting
is going to be a show of force, a Toronto love fest, people committing to
do what is necessary not only to stop cuts to city services, but to
actually expand those services.”

Nigel Barriffe is a teacher and community organizer in South Etobicoke: “I
live in Doug Ford’s ward. I am coming to this meeting with people who
voted him in and feel betrayed. There is no such thing as Ford Nation -
people were fooled for a bit, but they’ve woken up now. If these
councilors think they can just lay off workers, close libraries, daycares,
housing and cut vital services, they are in for a big, big surprise.”

Farid C. Partovi, is a community worker in Jane-Finch and a member of CUPE
4772: “Recreation centres, health services and community grants may be
gravy to millionaires like Rob Ford, but in our community we depend on
public services and the workers who provide them.  If they come after our
services, we are ready to fight them every step of the way.”
