From the November 30th 2012 edition of AW@L Radio - We start the show with a quick flash back to the september victory of the Musqueam over condo developers trying to build on a known indigenous burial site, in north vancouver, BC. This victory, dan argues, is a potential model of resistance to the planned development of a subdivision by the walton group on Tutela Heights, a known indigenous burial site near brantford, ontario, which has already led to work disruptions and court orders.
We then note the rare rejection of a mining project in BC as a copper mine in a pristine area was found to likely cause significant environmental impacts if built, and we also note the soon to come re-decision on allowing Taseko to destroy Fish Lake with a gold mine.
We then jump back to the grand river watershed as we remind folks of the announcement of the Mohawk Workers who joined 9 other civil society groups in brant county to oppose stupid developments, then dan quickly reads another piece that was re-posted to the MW's site noting the increasing power of Indigenous nations over resource development as an increase in court cases based on the charter have been won.
Next we present Aaron Lakoff's piece from FSRN on the Indigenous communities in western canada who are resisting pipelines, tar sands, and all other types of resource extraction and land destruction, and the solidarity protests going on to support them. On the same theme we have the admission that enbridge corp is in fact (as predicted) planning on shipping tar sands crude through the line 9 pipeline in ontario and quebec if its bid for approval to reverse the flow of the pipeline is accepted. We then present a letter to government and industry from allies of the ongoing Unist’ot’en actions against the pacific trails pipeline and all other projects which would harm the land.
Staying against pipelines, we jump back to resistance to line 9 in ontario where Stop the Flows Hamilton has been busy working to raise awareness about the dangers of tar sands oil coming through ontario. they have launched an indegogo campaign to help them fund the battle, so check it out and donate if you can! Dan then reads some sharp analysis from infoshop news on resisting pipelines, the line 9 reversal, and disrupting the flows of power in canada.
We then go to El Soor by Youssra El Hawary as a revolutionary interlude, and come back with a report about two recent container ship accidents off the BC coast which has obviously raised concerns about porting oil tankers on the rugged coast.
We finish the show with the horrifying report that the oceans potato chips (little snails) are having their shells melted off by the high acidity of the water caused through the increasingly increasing absorption of greenhouse gases into the oceans
