THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO EQUITY STUDIES STUDENT UNION PRESENTS QUEER ORIENTATION 2013: DISCOVERING QUEER POLITICAL COMMUNITIES

As part of Queer Orientation, the Equity Studies Students' Union presents “Discovering Queer Political Communities.” Come and listen to a diverse array of panelists about their experiences and involvement in the queer political scene in Toronto. Discover multiple ways of doing activism and community engagement, whether on the streets, in the academy, or behind the scenes. Panelists include UofT activist and academic, Natalie Kouri-Towe; Ryerson professor, writer and activist, Alan Sears; and community organizer janaya khan.
Speaker biographies:
Natalie Kouri-Towe is an academic and activist finishing her PhD at the University of Toronto. Her work examines the politics of solidarity and the growing transnational queer movement of Palestine solidarity activism.
Alan Sears is a queer anti-capitalist activist. He teaches Sociology at Ryerson University. He has written about queer activism, AIDS/HIV and radical movements. His most recent book is called "The Democratic Imagination," co-written with James Cairns.
janaya khan (j) is a queer cyborg (model #5483172) manufactured in the diaspora, who believes in the transformative power of emergence, consent and community accountability. they are an ardent afrofuturist, community organizer, facilitator and competitive boxer with a focus on queer and trans* spectrum communities through an anti-racist, anti-oppressive framework. their favourite word is 'akimbo'.
