This panel discussion will be an open forum exploring the intersections of sex positive spaces, party culture, accessibility, and safety. We aim to interrogate the question of what constitutes safe(r) social spaces. Issues addressed by the speakers will incorporate harm reduction, “sexual” bodies, racialization, consent in social spaces.

Panelists

Shriya Hari is the Community Development and Volunteer Coordinator at the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention (ASAAP). She is also currently the Research Coordinator for a project at ASAAP investigating the impact of story-sharing as a sexual health promotion model. She is pursuing her Master’s in Health Promotion at Queen’s University in Kingston, ON, where she helped co-organize POCTALK, an event that creates a space for self-identified people of colour to share their art, stories, poetry, and resistance. She spends her spare time writing and performing multilingual poetry related to her racialized and gendered experiences.

Akio Maroon is an internationally recognized Human Rights Advocate with a focus on advocacy in Sex Positivity, Equality, Social Justice and HIV/AIDS support systems. Akio is the Chair, Board of Directors at Maggie’s - Toronto Sex Workers’ Action Project and Executive Director of Grind Toronto, a movement that celebrates sex positivity, safer sex and promotes consent culture.

Norah Wardell is a researcher, supporter, and service provider of harm reduction health strategies in Toronto. Especially pertaining to sexual health. Norah is the External Education Coordinator and the Sex Education Centre at UofT, and thus spends a lot of time discussing the challenges and complexities of consent, peer-to-peer support vs. peer-to-peer pressure, and identity “inclusive” spaces.

Tim Rose is a longtime activist in Toronto’s disability community. He is also a passionate advocate for sex positivity in the world, and is the co-founder of The Rose Centre for Love, Sex and Disability. When he’s not sparking change or stirring up trouble, Tim is a writer, blogger and proud reality TV aficionado.
