New York - The TMC interviewed Kevin Parker at Left Forum - State Senator for the 21st District Brooklyn.
Toronto Media Co-op: Why are you here?
Kevin Parker: I believe in the work and see myself as a member of the left. I want to deepen relationships with common members working with others on the same issues.
Occupy has been successful in allowing us to pressure the governor to pass laws generating $2 billion in tax revenue and tax breaks for middle class folks in NY.
TMC: What do you think comes out of Left Forum?
KP: I think it allows us to connect with people working on the same issues and work out ways to be on the same page in terms of work and communicating messaging.
TMC: What are the issues you are working on?
KP: Job Creation (both private and public). We’re also trying to work on business contracting to women and minorities in the state of New York. 40% of the people in my district are immigrants and close to 70% come from immigrant families. We’re currently trying to pass the Dream Act which will allow international students and New College graduates to stay and work and give them a path to citizenship.
