The Media Co-op is a coast-to-coast network of local media co-operatives dedicated to providing grassroots, democratic coverage of their communities and of Canada.

We are looking for a creative, energetic and plugged-in Torontonian to join our editorial collective as Toronto Outreach Co-ordinator. You will work with the rest of the Media Co-op’s national editorial collective, primarily based in Montreal, to create top-quality radical, independent media for the Media Co-op network and our flagship magazine, The Dominion.

In your role as Outreach Co-ordinator, your primary responsibility will be to develop our presence in the GTA in conjunction with the local Toronto Media Co-op (TMC). We’re trying to grow our base of writers, readers, paying-members while trying to create a place for progressive, diverse and feminist news written in the public interest.
 
Toronto is a major city with alternative media offerings, and we need somebody with on-the-ground organizing experience, creativity, and energy to support and build the local presence of Toronto Media Co-op and to place The Dominion magazine and our unique, critical community-powered journalism into the hands of Torontonians.

Your work will include seeking and soliciting content for both the TMC and The Dominion magazine; in-person outreach and fundraising through events, conferences, and coalitions; online outreach; in-depth development of targeted outreach for published articles; building relationships with existing alternative and radical media projects in the GTA; and other tasks determined in conjunction with both the TMC and the national Media Co-op’s staff collective. You will attend weekly conference calls and monthly in-person meetings with the local TMC.

This position is funded through a partnership with Lakehead University. As such, you will also be devoting five hours a week to relating your experiences and your thoughts about community and alternative media. You will have a local contact in Toronto to help you with this aspect of the role. The position begins in early 2015.

Duties of the position

Content Production

  • Seeking and soliciting content for the site (print, blogs, video, audio, photography, news releases)
  • Editing, copy-editing both in print and online
  • Development of targeted outreach for published articles

Fundraising

  • Fundraising for the Media Co-op through events, membership and subscription sales, and special projects

Outreach/Collaboration

  • Outreach and promotion of the MC through events, conferences and coalitions
  • Online outreach through social media, listserves and email
  • Network/developing relationships with existing alternative and radical media in Toronto
  • Attending calls/in-person meetings with the Toronto Media Co-op Collective/Editors

Duties for the Media Action Research Group

  • Contribute to media action research with personal reflection and analysis through writing, blogging, etc.
  • Assist with Toronto research and outreach of media activists when needed
  • Assist with transcription, writing and editing when needed
  • Assist with research promotion (web, social media) as needed

Desired Skills

  • Skills in communications, media or journalism
  • Highly organized and able to meet ongoing deadlines
  • Fundraising experience with members, events and or subscription sales
  • Networking – social, in-person, vertical and horizontal.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with a team spread across the country
  • Strong editing and writing skills
  • Background in academic research

Desired Experience

  • Experience in working with media/journalism
  • Familiarity in working with community organizations
  • Experience in anti-oppression practices and anti-racist, feminist, ableist, queer organizing
  • Demonstrable success in seeking direct funding and doing outreach
  • Strong commitment to social justice and community-based movements
  • Demonstrable experience in producing and editing online and/or print content
  • Familiar with major research projects

The MC seeks workers from historically marginalized groups with lived experience including women, people of colour, indigenous people, queer and trans folks, people with disabilities, etc.

Salary: 15 hrs/week at $11.42/hour

This is a virtual position. You must have access to your own computer and reliable internet connection. Preference is for someone based in Toronto, but we are willing to consider strong candidates in other locations who have strong ties to the GTA (please note, we will not consider candidates outside of Southern Ontario).
