The First Nations Solidarity Working Group (FNSWG) of Toronto is issuing a call for communities to organize and respond to Christie Blatchford as she makes her way across Canada promoting her new book, Helpless; Caledonia's Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy, and How the Law Failed All of Us releasing on October 26th 2010. (http://www.randomhouse.ca/catalog/display.pperl?isbn=9780385670395)
In her book Blatchford chronicles the events starting in 2006 at “Douglas Creek Estates” in Caledonia where the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) people of the Grand River reclaimed land that has been in “dispute” for over 150 years. In the years, months and days leading up to the reclamation, and for more than a century, Six Nations people have educated, warned and entreated governments and residents to resolve the unlawful development of their land. Drawing upon some centuries-old colonial and racist tropes, Blatchford portrays Six Nations people, who were compelled to respond to the continual corporate development and theft of their land, as “criminals.” Ignoring the rampant anti-Native rallies that became weekly occurrences in the early part of the “crisis”, where police were often stretched to their limits controlling the crowds who chanted around barrels of fire “burn natives burn”, Blatchford champions white Caledonia residents as hero-victims, rendered helpless and traumatized by “native lawlessness.” Christie Blatchford does not speak for Caledonia. The residents of Caledonia hold a variety of diverse opinions, and certainly not all of them asked to be portrayed as “Helpless” by an irresponsible journalist. Blatchford is in close contact with leading anti-Native organizers in south-western Ontario and her coverage of the “Caledonia Crisis” has been compared to “a zombie movie. The Six Nations get to be the undead.”
Blatchford conveniently and very actively erases the fact that between 1951 and 2006, Six Nations has filed 29 land claims recognized as legitimate by the Canadian government, and out of which, only one claim, has been resolved. Equally important, Blatchford ignores the colonial context of the violences of residential schools (behind the former Mohawk Institute in Brantford, Six Nations children who did not survive the violences, were buried) , the massive incarceration of Aboriginal peoples, deaths in police custody, the Indian Act, over 800 missing and murdered Aboriginal women, and other outside-imposed governance structures under which Six Nations peoples have been living and surviving for centuries. Today, the current Six Nations land base represents only 5% of the 950,00 acres outlined in the Haldimand Proclamation of 1784 as their sovereign territory. Blatchford says her book is not about “aboriginal land claims”, but “the failure of government to govern and to protect all its citizens equally.” Blatchford is thus reproducing the colonial logic of erasing the histories and present context of violence done to Indigenous nations and peoples. This erasure does not belong to Blatchford alone, mainstream media accounts of the reclamation have been largely distorted with sensationalistic accounts that portray Caledonia as an ongoing warzone.
When the root of the “Caledonia Crisis” is the ongoing land-theft of Six Nations territory, we need to ask Blatchford what she means by stating that her book is not about land claims. We need to show people reading or listening to her , how the erasure of land claims decontextualizes the very root of the issue, and works to portray Indigenous land defenders as “thugs” bent on chaos and anarchy. We need to go out in our communities to underline that in order to uphold the “rule of law” , Treaties - the foundation of Canadian law - must be upheld and respected.
Christie Blatchford is taking her book on a tour across Canada and will be selling her book at your local bookstores and/or be making an appearance in your community. We must not allow Blatchford’s account of the events at Caledonia to go unchallenged. We are calling on you to respond to Blatchford’s appearance in your community and educate others about the context of Six Nations reclamation, land-claims, and colonialism.
Let us also show Blatchford that she does not speak for all Canadians and that we will not let her speak in our name. Organize and respond to Blatchford’s presence in your community at bookstores and everywhere she is making speaking appearances.
For questions, information, resources or to share ideas with other group who are organizing responses please contact info@6nsolidarity.ca

Unfortunately, event at the Aurora Library is full-up. What she says is wrong and who will be there to disagree with her. I hope there are good questions directed to her from the floor that her information is incorrect. That she does not speak for 'me'. But she will get good publicity for this type of speaking but does she know that her information is incorrect and the First Nations peoples will suffer more.
Can you tell me why she isn't t talking about the violences of residential schools, the missing and murdered women, I believe we are at 800? The land claims that need to be addressed why isn't she talking about that and raising the awareness? She should be talking about the land claims.
The Six Nations Whoever is in attendance, PLEASE speak out and get the history right.

Why aren't you writing about this? Christie Blatchford's book is a welcome relief from all this "politically correct" bs. The victims in Caledonia are CANADIANS and should be protected from violence. And the NATIVE protesters were violent, they repeatedly broke the law and were allowed to do so.
Let's silence it! Don't allow Christie to speak her mind! Ah, the ways of the most bitter, regressive elements of native communities, where racism and hate are rampant.
Ain't ignorance bliss and than to write about something that you claim you know all about. Know your history from start to end and the future. Wow ain't it so bad that Native people are finally taking a stanz and saying enough is enough honor your treaties, your word, governments of the past are governments of today. This is our homeland and not theirs. Each million person on north america continuent did not orginate from here. They all come from some place else. As just like all the other original people from Jamaca, the bahama's all whom Christorpher Columbus found just because he was lost. What a great sailor he was. Lost trying to get to Indian. The genicide started there of all the orginal peoples of their own homeland. Greed. Now that their decents of England, Spain, etc claim how dare the original people of this land that we took and stole from and mismanaged their funds and lied to them and said oh we will pay for this land and never did. They just took. Dam savages they said, they are dumb, they will never know. Lets just kill them all. But we still survived, lived through what you immigrants dished out all in the Name of God. Yeah okay, This was your opinion, still is but its totally different and every one of you decendents of comeing to our homeland are finding out O My God they are resisting and fighting back. Lets try some new ways of making them go away. Well it is 2010 and guess what we are no longer those dumb savages. All your past treaties and lack of payments for the land that was taken will be paid for and no longer taken from what little we have left. Write and say what you want, As this is one close minded, ignorant of the fact person opinion of what they think o well thats the society that was built. So we all live here in the same society. Makes us no wrong than it makes you. Maybe every person of Native decent should write a book as well. It will be our opinion just like your book is. Hats off to your Ignorance, I applaund you. What ever. everyone has the right to their opinion and say what they want.

Wow. I cannot believe that a professional journalist would write about something that she has no understanding of, or accurate information about. It is very sad to see someone going out and speaking in public about something she has no facts about.
The above comment should be removed since it attempts to insult the author (though it was only posted by an individual on behalf of CUPE 3903 FIRST-NATIONS SOLIDARITY WORKING GROUP). It is pretty rich that the commenter wants to discuss "facts" yet can't even differentiate between who authored the piece and who simply posted it. Thanks for coming out.
Regardless, any colonialist, racist scum such as Blatchford will see resistance in every town in which she tries to spread her hate.

I know its a bitter pill to swallow for those on the radical left but the book presents a factual account of what happened in Caledonia. Read it before you disparage it. Don't poo poo the facts simply because they turn your worldview on its head.
Blatchford is spot on for having conservative, euro-centric views. Saying that Six Nations people were being "lawless" while trying to assert their land claim is absurd. Governance and law had been forced upon these people, it was and is illegitimate. This is reclamation, and yes, the white folks who wanted to develop Douglas Creek were upset by this assertion.
Blatchford claims to want the government to "protect citizens equally" yet conveniently forgets the generations of theft and abuses brought on by european hegemony. It also doesn't help that she has very close working relationships with anti-native activists who are now running for municipal seats, such as the Caledonia Victims Project.
It is a narrow view to assume that everyone puts themselves on your useless political spectrum of left and right, partisan crap. Don't assume the "radical left" is your opposition Blatchford. The First Nations have settler allies and we are much more imaginative than that. Frankly, anybody foolish enough to wave the maple flag should not be trusted; it is a symbol of ignorance and oppression.
I am in the process of watching Ms Blatchford on the Michael Coren Show on Utube. I intend to purchase the book. I found this site when doing a google search on Ms Blatchford in order to find a place to order her book!
As per the person above who makes the statement; "Each million person on north america continuent did not orginate from here. They all come from some place else. As just like all the other original people from Jamaca, the bahama's all whom Christorpher Columbus found just because he was lost. What a great sailor he was. Lost trying to get to Indian", my goodness, does this person not realize we ALL come from somewhere else?? Yes, the aboriginal tribes do have some unresolved issues, some quite legitimate. That is no reason to commit the acts that were committed in Caledonia.
I notice this site seems to be connected to CUPE. Does this union want to use it's funding and power to shut down any dissenting opinion? Christie Blatchford seems to be telling the truth. That is never a bad thing.
This site is a national, member-supported media cooperative with local news-hubs such as the Toronto Media Co-op which you stumbled upon. It is often a space for press releases of many organizations, and does not necessarily represent the entire co-op. So no, CUPE does not "use its funding and power" to do what ever you think they're doing. This kind of free speech is the continuing hard work of thousands of members, contributors and readers. Sadly for us all Micheal Coren seldom contributes.
Hopefully you can find this book at Chapters and in turn support the lone soldier fund.
This is an excellent comment on Blatchfords book. I plan to copy this off and take it to my local library so it is available to anyone who might borrow the book.
I am a UW student and am appalled that they have this book as the monthly feature in the Bookstore. UW's Aboriginal community does not support this book or the author. Please contact the Director of Retail Services, who operates the Bookstore and made the decision to host this author, and join in the fight to demand that this book is removed and the author event is cancelled.
I read this book and found it was not about land claims at all. It was about the policing of the OPP and the beginning of a 2 tiered policing system. where the victims were arrested while the law breakers were not.
This is a good book, well written and I would suggest that you read it before commenting on it.
Please note that there is no hate towards Ms. Blatchford. I actually have a great deal of respect for her. There was just disappointment in her misunderstanding of a very complex issue. She needs to dig a little deeper into her research. This is NOT an attempt to insult her. I am actually quite alarmed that someone would see this as such. I guess words are interpreted in many differnet ways.
A misunderstanding, I thought that you were talking about the mediaco-op member who posted the news release. It seemed that you were speaking to the article about the book tour.
I didn't consider Blatchford a very "professional" journalist in the first place; this is not the first questionable piece that has been published by her. I certainly wasn't intending to defend her.
Anyone who can be embedded in Afghanistan and not speak out against it is an asshole.

Christie Blatchford: 'Helpless: Caledonia's Nightmare of Fear and Anarchy, and How the Law Failed All of Us'
Tuesday, November 16th at 7:00pm
Hamilton Chedoke Presbyterian Church
This event is a fundraiser for the Argyll & Sutherland Regiment Women's Auxiliary
NO HATERS! says we shouldn't hate then calls Blatchford a colonialist, racist scum.
The book is about the selective response of the OPP to
people breaking the laws. It makes some very good points, and convinces me a
about the nature of the situation a lot more than the usual victim
rhetoric on this page.
The commenter that wants to ban Blatchford from speaking about the book should be happy she was banned from Waterloo U.
If someone wants to write a book about the
native land claim and the protest I'd be interested in reading about that too, and I wouldn't ban them from speaking.
