MEDIA RELEASE:
Occupy Toronto Participants to Remain in Park
TORONTO, 15 November 2011 – At a General Assembly today, the people of Occupy Toronto decided to remain in the park, despite the eviction notices served by the City of Toronto.
We re-affirm our right to the use of public space to assemble, peacefully protest and establish collective dialogue on issues that affect us all. These rights are guaranteed to all of us through the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We welcome the support of 11 city councilors who oppose the immediate eviction of Occupy Toronto.
Inspired by Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Toronto has been converging at St. James Park since October 15th. We stand in solidarity with the global movement against a broken economic system that does not take into account our environmental and social needs.
Dialogue and mobilization will be continuing throughout the night and we call on everyone to come to the park and stand with us to defend our right to continue this process. There will be a General Assembly at 6pm and a rally at 11pm.
To Rob Ford we say: you cannot evict an idea whose time has come!
