A crowd assembled outside of the Hudbay Minerals headquarters on September 26 to honor Adolfo Ich Chamán, a Mayan Q’eqchi community leader who was killed by security personnel at the Fenix Mining Project in Guatemala. The memorial was lead by Tata Bartolo, an Ajq'ij or spiritual guide, who reflected on community solidarity and justice. Participants then formed a candleit procession, moving north on Bay Street and through Toronto's financial district.This memorial was organized by the Mining Injustice Solidarity Network and the Maritimes-Guatemala Breaking the Silence network, and was held in conjunction with a memorial taking place in El Estor, Guatemala.  

The memorial also demonstrated solidarity with members of the Mayan Q’eqchi’ community in El Estor, who are currently in the midst of legal proceedings with Hudbay Minerals.They have filed three lawsuits against the company for the death Adolfo Ich Chamán, the shooting of German Chub, and the rape of eleven women by security forces at the subsidairy mining project. In July 2013, the Ontario Superior Court ruled that Hudbay Minerals can be held responsible for abuses that take place at their mining projects abroad, a precendent-setting decision that meant the three lawsuits could proceed to trial in Canada.
