August 10 is the day prisoners and supporters honour the memory of the those who have died needlessly in prisons. We'll gather to express solidarity with everyone incarcerated in our institutions, and to call for changes within the criminal justice system that would respect and reflect the humanity of us all.
2012 marks the 38th anniversary of the death of Eddie Nolan, who died August 10, 1974 when the emergency call button in his solitary confinement cell at Millhaven Penitentiary failed. In May 1976, Bobby Kanders died of a heart attack -- emergency call buttons still hadn't been fixed...
What began as a day of fasting and refusal to work by prisoners has become an annual day of remembrance and advocacy. Please join us.
Many supporters will fast during the day in solidarity with those who are incarcerated. A hot meal will be served at the end of the day to break the fast. Water will be available all day.
