I am in Quebec City, so my comment is a bit out of line, so this is just a suggestion.

As we all know by now I presume, yesterday 36 members of the Toronto City Council voted a motion declaring that the police had done a fine job. As you can read is this very good article, some of the elected showed concern for the human rights violations and the repression, but others showed a total carelessness for the victims, of which over 1000 arbitrary arrest, not to mention the numerous reports of brutality, threats of rape, laughing at people suffering in detention, and the dire conditions in the G20 cages. My words here cannot convey the gravity of the situation nor the criminality of the actions of some police officers.

Though there was concern and criticism from some, it remains they voted a motion declaring the police actions had been "outstanding". If they were truly aware or caring of the grave and massive human rights violations, they would have kept to something more moderate like "good work in the circumstances" at worse, but instead they chose the most extreme wording of complete approval.

But the motion does call for an inquiry, which might explain the vote for, while appeasing the police: cities are often afraid to anger their own police.

Action proposed : Those elected who deny the testimonies of the people or who simply did not listen or care because they are blindly in admiration of "their" police, deserve to be ousted from office next elections and, until then, constantly confronted by the legal facts. If in their hearts civil liberties and freedom of press is something that can be set aside, we must kick them out of office (democratically).

Of course, that principle should be applied by the people in all elections, at all levels, that is to say: make sure the person you vote for will uphold a state of law, where everyone, be they police officer or elected official, will be placed under the law. Supporting democratic practices (giving power to the people) should also be a criteria when judging a candidate.

Here, while I estimate that about 30 to 50 people may have broken windows at a specific moment Saturday, over 1100 people, all week long, were denied common Canadian justice standards (rights) and countless (both detained or not) were submitted to police violence, lies, sexual threats, insults, etc. In a sense I guess you could say it was outstanding.
