From the Mayan Nation to Cree Nation: Resistance to Canadian mining company HudBay Minerals

See video

On Monday, January 28, 2013, as the Idle No More movement called for a global day of action, Mathias Colomb Cree First Nation Chief Arlen Dumas issued a stop work order to Canadian mining company Hudbay Minerals related to the Lalor mine in the Flin Flon-Snow Lake region, MB. Dozens gathered peacefully outside Hudbay's Lalor mine, preventing vehicles from entering.

Chief Dumas: “The province of Manitoba as well as Hudbay have claimed that for the last fifty years, there are no native people on this part of our territory…we have band members to this day that there are only a few kilometres away from this [Lalor mine] site that still use their land, that exercise their treaty and inherent rights.”

In Choc v. Hudbay, five Mayan Q'eqchi' plaintiffs are suing Hudbay in an Ontario Court. Hudbay's security is accused of participating in the brutal shootings, rapes and forced displacement of Mayans at its former mining project in Guatemala.
